I wanted to let you know that my family and I are ok.
We rode out the Hurricane at a Four Points Sheraton in Tampa, 3 miles from our house. We picked this hotel because it had an interior atrium, interior facing rooms, an elevated covered garage for the cars, a generator in case of power outages and a restaurant that would remain open throughout the storm.
In all honesty, I spent the majority of the day writing the prior email, sleeping and laying in bed resting and being glued to the TV tracking the storm and it’s wrath. I contemplated going to the gym but I just could not muster the energy. It was actually the easiest day I’ve had in two weeks since most others where spent as I described in previous emails.
Unfortunately, our room faced north and was in the direct path of the winds which started around 5:00 PM. At about 9.00 PM we realized we were taking in water through the windows. And I don’t mean a little water coming through the window but raging rivers of water. (ok, that is a slight exaggeration)
We spend about 45 min to an hour trying to stop the water from coming in. It was poetic that we were using a bucket to take the storm water coming through the window to the bathtub because I have been kidding that all our efforts to prepare the house for this hurricane where the equivalent of trying to “stop an ocean with a bucket” and here we were using a bucket to keep the storm from coming into the room!
As you can imagine, trying to stop a hurricane’s blowing rain from pouring through the windows is a futile effort. You press the towel against the window frame, feeling it quickly soak up water, only to wring it out seconds later. The towel becomes saturated almost instantly, forcing you to repeat the process over and over, as puddles form around you. It became pretty clear that a towel is no match for the amount of water pouring in.
While this was going on, the Fire Alarm went off!!! Loud Evacuation Warnings came through the hotel speaker system. Already on edge from the storm’s howling winds and pounding rain coming in the window, the loud blare of the alarm created a mass panic, not just for my family but all other hotel guests. Our kids who were dispersed with friends quickly rushed to the room. As we gathered our passports and other valuables, stuffed the cat in the carrier and put the leash on the dog, the False Alarm warning came on brining a HUGE sense of relief for everyone.
At this point, we received word from the hotel that there was another room available, which faced east and not in the direct path of the winds. Except for the fire alarm going off 3 other times, including at 2:00 am in the morning, the rest of the night was uneventful.
As the sun was rising, we were able to drive to our house to assess the damage and were thrilled to see that our little house on San Rafael made it just fine! The pile of debris didn’t fly off and the Large Oak on the back yard didn’t fall on the house. The tarps we so meticulously placed on the garage and front door did the jobs and the house is dry. So maybe we did stop the hurricane with the bucket after all!
We are very lucky to have power at both the San Rafael house and the house we are staying at so we will be heading home shortly and will begin the rebuilding efforts as soon as it is feasible.
Thank you to everyone who has responded to my emails. I really appreciate all the support and uplifting emails you have been sending. I enjoy writing these emails and perhaps some day will make the time to write my life story as so many of you have suggested.
